The History of the SVC Thundercats

In the Beginning...
... a man by the name of Jym Walters made his triumphet return to St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. He and a small band of warriors started what would become a great movement in the St. Vincent Community. With the help of the likes of Jaime Caridi, Kate Wojtunik, George Kacenga, Jon Strine, John Wohar, Marissa, Nick Rhiel, Adam Jakubek, and many others, Jym was able to influence many others to join in the great game of Ultimate Frisbee.

In the fall of 2002, Jym and his small band continued to spread the love of the game to the first freshmen class to reside in the newly built St. Benedict Hall. Of this class, many Ultimate players were found who had a love for the game as well; none of which were as passionate as a young man by the name of Bill Saxe. Not knowing him personally, I have no memories of him; but those who knew him said he had a skill and love for the game that was matched by very few people.

On September 19, 2002, Bill Saxe passed away in Latrobe Hospital. On that day, he and his fellow Ultimate companions were playing on the lower fields of St. Vincent College when Saxe suffered a severe heart attack. The passing of Saxe was mourned by all in the St. Vincent community. In dedication of his life, on Sunday, April 6th, 2003, the 1st Annual Bill Saxe Ultimate Frisbee Hat Tournament was organized by Jym Walters and friends. Here, students, administration, and friends came together to play Ultimate and, above all, to meet new friends.

In his tournament, several players met for the first time: Alex Prizzi, Joe Finau, Camille Florendo, Chase Gladstone, Dave McDevitt, Benny Kleifgen, and others who have now started the organization of one of St. Vincent College's fastest growing clubs. The following year, the club was joined by members of the 2003 Freshmen Class who quickly became the anchor of the club team. The team made their first official appearance with the leadership of Jym Walters at a tournament at Juniata College.
Today...
... the SVC Ultimate Frisbee Club is bigger and better than ever. The freshmen from the 2004 class helped to establish the base of the Thundercats team that went to sectionals for the first time ever! The team continues to improve and the club continues to grow.
